Reigning Conference USA champion Kennesaw State welcomes Jacksonville State to Fifth Third Stadium on Wednesday, aiming to end a three-loss skid. The 1-3 Owls overcame the Gamecocks’ bulldozing ground game to take the conference title in December but head into their first C-USA game of the season lacking confidence.

Kennesaw State’s last outing ended in a 17-14 defeat at Arkansas State almost a fortnight ago, though the one promising stat line was its ability to stuff the run. The Red Wolves rushed for only 119 yards (3.8 yards per attempt) and only edged the fixture thanks to a lone, fourth-quarter field goal.

The 3-2 Gamecocks are offering a mightier threat in that regard, led by the dynamic presence of quarterback Caden Creel, who boasts as many rushing scores (three) as the rest of his team combined. Combined with the defensive duo of star safety Caleb Nix and linebacker Walker O’Steen, each of whom has 30 total tackles this season, Jacksonville State has the makings of a solid base to get win No. 4.

Owls quarterback Rickie Collins, a summer transfer from Syracuse, also leads his team’s rush unit with 185 yards (190 fewer than Creel) and an identical three rushing touchdowns. Two passing touchdowns through four games for Kennesaw State hints at an over-reliance on the ground game, however, which could be exposed back on home soil.
