Drake Maye finally looked more like himself again on Sunday as his New England Patriots pulled off a surprising victory against the Buffalo Bills at the new Highmark Stadium.
It has been a tricky start to the season for the Patriots quarterback following his trip to the Super Bowl just a matter of months ago. However, Sunday’s performance has offered Maye the opportunity to finally get his season up and running.
Week 4 ✅ Who impressed you most in the NFL this weekend, and why?
The struggling quarterback was aided by some of his offensive outlets, with Efton Chism III helping himself to a big-time touchdown and Romeo Doubs snagging two of his own. The latter of which even left future Hall of Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski surprised with just how well he performed up in Buffalo.
Rob Gronkowski shocked by Romeo Doubs’ performance in Patriots-Bills
Doubs ended the game on Sunday with 58 receiving yards and two touchdowns. They were the first touchdowns scored by the wide receiver all season. Clearly, his performance pleasantly surprised Gronkowski, who sang his praise on the Up & Adams Show.
“The team helped him [Maye] big time. McDaniel was calling some great plays. Also, the wide receivers were getting open. For example, Romeo Doubs on those two touchdowns. I didn’t think Romeo Doubs had this in him, but he showed confidence at the top of the route, finishing the play,” said Gronk.
“The way that he scored on the fade route, the cornerback was draped all over him, but he gave the little booster right at the end to get open, and Drake Maye led him. That’s the type of confidence and quality of routes that Drake Maye needs so he can go out there and place the ball, complete passes, and score touchdowns.”
It must be remembered that Maye is still playing without his WR1 following A.J. Brown’s injury in the season-opener against the Seattle Seahawks. The Patriots are said to be optimistic that Brown could make a return for Week Six.
This will naturally add another boost for Maye on the Patriots’ offence after what has been a stuttering start to the season from the quarterback. Winning against the Bills was a big upset going off the two teams’ recent form and it has certainly provided the Patriots with an unexpected opportunity to build on their underwhelming start to the year.
