While the Carolina Panthers spent their bye weekend out of the weather, plenty of teams with local ties delivered a busy day across the sports world — including a bizarre finish in Washington’s game against New York.

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels returned from injury and helped the Commanders build a 12-6 lead in the third quarter. Daniels then took off on a 38-yard run to make it a two-possession game. He added another rushing score later to put Washington up 27-13 with 11 minutes to go.

But the Giants rallied to force overtime. Jameis Winston hit Malik Nabers over the middle to set up the comeback. In overtime, the Giants had a chance to take the lead with a field goal on their first possession but missed. Both teams then fumbled, setting up a final Washington possession with the Commanders in field-goal range.

Instead of spiking the ball or throwing it out of bounds, Daniels went down with no timeouts and the clock expired, ending the game in a tie.

In Pittsburgh, Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers beat the Colts 34-22 behind big plays from Jaylen Warren. Warren broke an 80-yard play down the sideline for a touchdown, then later ripped off a 50-yard gain. He finished with 188 combined rushing and receiving yards as Pittsburgh held on for the win. Rodgers also connected with Pat Freiermuth for a touchdown.

In New England, former UNC quarterback Drake Maye powered the Patriots to a 45-17 win over the Raiders. Maye finished 26 of 34 for 374 yards and four passing touchdowns, and added a rushing touchdown for five total scores as New England moved to a two-game win streak.

In Major League Baseball, Cleveland starter Gavin Williams delivered a standout performance in a winner-take-all Game 5 against Chicago for a spot in the ALCS. The former ECU Pirate struck out 12 White Sox batters, tying a franchise postseason record for most strikeouts in a single game. Williams went 5 2/3 innings, allowing no runs and one hit, as Cleveland shut out Chicago 2-0 to advance to the American League Championship Series. Cleveland will head to Tampa Bay for Game 1 at 8 p.m. Monday.

At Charlotte Motor Speedway, NASCAR’s Chase Briscoe edged teammate Christopher Bell in a photo finish, getting the nose of his car ahead for his second straight win and third Cup Series victory of the season, boosting his points position in the Chase.

On the ice, the Carolina Hurricanes completed a back-to-back road sweep. After a 5-2 win in Chicago on Saturday night, the Hurricanes followed with a 4-1 win Sunday in Philadelphia. Sebastian Aho had a goal and an assist, giving him six goals and 11 points in seven games as Carolina won its fifth straight.
