Following the addition of Dawuane Smoot, a move the Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Tuesday, what does the team’s defensive end depth chart now look like?

Smoot is a familiar face in Jacksonville, a former third-round pick by the team in 2017; he spent his first seven seasons with the Jaguars before joining the Buffalo Bills for the 2024 season.

During his tenure with the Jaguars, Smoot played in 99 games, which included 17 starts, and recorded 23.5 sacks. His most productive season as a pass rusher came in 2021 when he logged 50 pressures.

The addition of Smoot provides the Jaguars with some additional competition when it comes to the back end of their defensive end rotation. We know that Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker will shoulder the workload, and the team also added Emmanuel Ogbah after the NFL draft, and he will likely step into that third edge rusher role.

But at a position that, at times, can be relatively heavily rotated, having four players getting snaps at defensive end throughout the course of a game is fairly common, not to mention that we often see five roster spots devoted to this specific position.

“I think that’s an important piece,” defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile said of the third edge rusher role, “because that guy, when you go back at the end of the year, that guy has a ton of production for you–the next guy in.”

So, beyond Hines-Allen, Walker, and Ogbah on the depth chart, there may be some playing time up for grabs and certainly a roster spot or two as well.
