PHILADELPHIA (WBTV) – A star quarterback will miss his team’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers this weekend.
The Philadelphia Eagles’ three-time Pro Bowl quarterback, Jalen Hurts, will reportedly miss the Week 6 contest against the Panthers due to a superficial blood clot.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the condition and obtained a statement from the Eagles. In that statement, the Eagles said the issue first arose after Hurts said his calf was cleated during Philadelphia’s game against the Rams on Oct. 4.
Hurts got treatment and while the clot was discovered prior to Philadelphia’s Oct. 11 game against the Jaguars, the Eagles’ statement said medical staff determined he could “safely” play in that contest.
The team’s statement said a follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday night revealed movement in the clot and will force him to miss the Oct. 18 game against the Panthers.
With Hurts out, backup quarterback Tanner McKee will start for Philadelphia against Carolina.
McKee has two starts during his four-year career with the Eagles. He won one and lost one. In those starts, he completed 59% of his passes for 510 yards, with three touchdowns and one interception.
What Hurts’ absence means for Carolina
No Jalen Hurts would certainly seem to bode well for the Panthers’ chance of winning on Sunday.
Philadelphia was already likely without star running back Saquon Barkley, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, and others against Carolina.
One thing the Panthers can’t do, though, is take the Eagles lightly.
Carolina is still going on the road to a hostile environment, and will still have to deal with a fairly good Eagles defense headlined by elite defensive lineman Jalen Carter.
If the Panthers can just take care of business, they should be fine.
Sportsbooks responded almost immediately to the Hurts news. Most had a near-even line before Hurts was ruled out, but in the hour after, the line had already shifted in Carolina’s favor. The Panthers moved to 3.5-point favorites by mid-afternoon Thursday.
Kickoff for Sunday’s Panthers-Eagles game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on WBTV/CBS.
