Brock Purdy credits part of his success and aggressive approach this season to the 49ers defense he faced every day in training camp.

Through five games, Purdy has thrown 13 touchdown passes — the most in the NFL — and only two interceptions, while ranking second in passer rating at 119.3. San Francisco is 5-0, and NFL.com ranked Purdy No. 1 in its MVP tracker after the first five weeks.

Asked on Friday how going against defensive coordinator Raheem Morris’ more aggressive schemes in camp has carried into the regular season, Purdy had high praise for the daily work he faced against his own defense.

“I thought we had a great camp going up against Raheem’s scheme and everything,” Purdy said.

Purdy described Morris’ scheme as featuring a lot more man coverage, match technique and tighter windows, with only the occasional zone look that let him drop the ball into the bucket over hook defenders. He said he was not sure the practice reps included as many “layered kind of throws” because everything seemed tight.

“A lot more man, match technique and tighter windows and stuff, felt like everything for me had to be on time, and I had to be aggressive,” Purdy said.

Purdy said the habit did not stay on the practice field.

“For the most part, man, he made me have to play aggressive, and I appreciated that. I actually think that’s translated into the season for me to throw with that,” Purdy said. “So it’s a big credit to Raheem.”

The approach has been near flawless. In a 32-29 Week 5 win at Seattle, Purdy threw only his second interception of the season and posted a 92.5 passer rating, the only mark under 100 he has had this year. He was also sacked three times after going the first four games without being sacked, but he still led the go-ahead drive in the fourth quarter.

The San Francisco defense held up its end in Seattle, too. The 49ers forced four turnovers, including a fumble recovery for a touchdown, while sacking quarterback Sam Darnold five times.

Whether the habits built against Morris’ defense keep paying off over the rest of the season is the next test, but Purdy has been clear about where he thinks they started.
