The topic has been one that has been brewing amongst Tennessee Titans fans for nearly four years.

And, yes, that Columbia blue elephant in the room has been discussed inside the meeting rooms at Vanderbilt Health Training Center this week.

The “elephant” is winning two games in a row for the Titans, something the organization has not done in nearly four full calendar years – a span of 64 games. Coincidentally, the Titans play host to the Cleveland Browns, who hold the modern record for not winning two games in a row at 65 games between 2014 and 2018, according to ESPN research.

You have to go back to November 2022 to find the last time the Tennessee Titans were victorious in two consecutive games – Nov. 13 at home against the Denver Broncos and then that following Thursday night in a primetime game at Green Bay.

At that point, the Titans were 7-3 on the season, leading the AFC South, and seemingly poised for their fifth playoff berth in a six-year span.

The, the wheels came off. Not all of the events that followed in the aftermath of those wins had an effect on the organization bottoming out. But when then-offensive coordinator Todd Downing was arrested in the wee hours of the following morning, it was the first in a series of negative incidents that have plagued the Titans ever since.

A few weeks later, general manager Jon Robinson was fired, and that set off a chain reaction that in the next few years led to the departures of Mike Vrabel, Ran Carthon, Brian Callahan and Chad Brinker.

Now with Robert Saleh in charge, and the Titans coming off the first win of his tenure Sunday in Indianapolis, the Titans will try once again to win consecutive games and stay out of the record book.

Saleh has had very little to do with the Titans’ streak of struggles – just six games. But make no mistake, he is aware of the statistic and made sure his team is aware of it as well, for those who are new to the franchise.

“We brought it up,” Saleh said. “He’s gonna hate me for this, but Peter (Skoronski) hasn’t won back-to-back games since his freshman year of college. So this is a big ‘win one for Pete’ week.”

Asked about it in the locker room, Skoronski said it happened during Covid in 2020 when his Northwestern Wildcats won five in a row his first year there and played in the Citrus Bowl.

Saleh knows such a rough stretch has been hard on a lot of people in the organization.

“It’s been a hard stretch for the organization, and a proud organization too. There’s been a lot of winning here,” Saleh said. “I spent a lot of time in Houston, time in Jacksonville, and Tennessee has always been at the top of the division. So I recognize that it’s been a hard stretch. I think 13-51 in the last 64 games, which is not easy and not easy for a lot of guys in the locker room, who have played in every single one of those games. It’s not easy for the fans and it’s not easy for you guys (media) who cover it. But like I said, this organization is going to have the sun shining on it again soon.”

Tight end Gunnar Helm said Saleh put up a slide in a team meeting to emphasize the need to end this infamous streak.

“Guys that have been in this building, and obviously guys who have been in the organization, a lot of guys have gone a long time without a real win streak. We’ve got a real good test coming to town and winning is everything in this league. So, all of our efforts are on Cleveland and winning two in a row,” said Helm.

Helm, who is only in his second year from the University of Texas, is one of a lot of Titans who played on winning teams in college, but have yet to taste much of it since coming to the NFL.

“It’s really hard to win in this league. A lot of games come down to one possession, one score. We’re just looking to own those moments,” Helm said.

Injury report

Saleh did not rule out any players for Sunday’s game, but receiver Calvin Ridley missed his second straight day of practice with a hip injury on Friday and will be questionable for the game on Sunday.
