GREEN BAY — Josh Jacobs will not have the final say on whether he makes his season debut in the Green Bay Packers pivotal NFC North matchup with the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Xavier McKinney will not have a vote, either.

But as far as the Packers two-time All-Pro safety is concerned, his old college teammate is more than ready to reinvigorate the NFL’s least-productive running game and give the offense a lift.

“Hell, yeah. Yeah. For sure,” McKinney said of the Packers former Pro Bowl running back, who spent the first six weeks of the seasons on the NFL’s commissioner’s exempt list as the league continues its investigation into his May arrest in connection with a domestic disturbance at his Green Bay-area home in May.

“I mean, I’ve been watching him work out and prepare, and getting ready for whenever that moment was going to come. And now that it’s here, obviously, there might be some rust here and there, but a fresh-legged Josh is going to be a monster.”

Head coach Matt LaFleur did not commit to Jacobs playing against the Lions, but when asked Friday if he thought Jacobs was on track to play, LaFleur replied, “Yeah, I believe so. But again, we’ll get through it and see how he’s feeling and the confidence he has in himself, which I think is pretty strong.”

Without Jacobs, the Packers entered Week 7’s games as the NFL’s worst rushing offense, ranking dead last in the 32-team NFL in both yards per game (59.8) and yards per attempt (2.87).

“I think we’ll have a plan in place whether or not he can go, and then, we’ll adjust from there,” LaFleur said. “I think it changes something a little bit [if he does play]. You’ve got a dynamic back you want to get the ball to, let him go to work.”

Although Jacobs is off the commissioner’s exempt list, he’ll still need to be added to the 53-man roster. After removing him from the list, the league gave the Packers a roster exemption as he returned to practice.

For his part, Jacobs has no doubt he’ll be good to go.

“My goal is to play. I don’t know how much they’re going to allow me to play, honestly … I don’t know what their mindset is,” Jacobs said. “If it’s up to me, I’m going to try to play.”
