Every so often, an undrafted free agent joins an NFL team following the draft and makes an immediate impact as a rookie.

For the Buffalo Bills, they signed 12 UDFAs at the conclusion of this year’s draft, and those 12 players will be fighting to get their talent recognized by the coaching staff this offseason.

According to CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso, there is one Bills UDFA in particular that we should be keeping an eye on, and that is safety Wande Owens out of the University of New Hampshire.

Last year, the Bills had 10 former UDFAs on their opening-day roster, which made up for 18.9% of the 53 players. And, two of them were rookies after going overlooked in the 2024 draft (Joe Andreessen, Brandon Codrington). The idea that Owens could land on the roster isn’t far-fetched.

Owens played four years at Yale where he earned two first-team All-Ivy selections and one second-team, while serving as a team captain for a year. After graduating from Harvard with a bachelors degree in computer science in 2023, he joined UNH as a grad student. He appeared in 13 games in 2024 and finished the season second on his team in total tackles (111) and sixth in his conference (CAA). He was a first team All-CAA selection.

Not only does he bring immense experience as a leader on his team’s defenses, but he is a versatile player that can be moved around, which head coach Sean McDermott and defensive coordinator Bobby Babich value in their players. He’s a safety that can play up in the box, play in the slot, and he can come downhill in a hurry to make a play on the ball. To top it off, he played cornerback at Yale. He’s produced 276 tackles in his career, as he’s constantly been around the ball while performing in multiple programs.

While Owens’ talent is one to watch for, he will have to make himself known in a secondary that is pretty crowded in Buffalo this offseason. There are a lot of guys on the roster who were either drafted or were paid as free agents that will get opportunities before him, but his ability to play multiple roles, including special teams, will help his odds of sticking around in Buffalo.

Check out what CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso said about Owens below:

Wande Owens has the complete makeup to sneak onto this Bills team. He was a do-everything safety at two different schools — Yale and New Hampshire — and he’s a freaky athlete. At a chiseled 5-foot-11 and 205 pounds, Owens ran a 4.58-second 40-yard dash and had a ridiculous 43-inch vertical jump and 11-3 broad jump.

He rarely missed at tackle in college as an insert into the box, and was credited with two interceptions along with 15 pass breakups in his four-year career. The Bills have former All-Pro Taron Johnson as their nickel corner, but don’t be shocked when Owens puts up a valiant and ultimately successful fight to be a key defensive backfield reserve as early as his rookie season.
