The Seattle Seahawks are taking a long-term approach with rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe. The expectation has been that Milroe will be brought along slowly as the team’s No. 3 quarterback behind starter Sam Darnold and veteran backup Drew Lock.

The Seahawks are about midway through OTAs, with mandatory minicamp and training camp looming. Head coach Mike Macdonald is sticking to his word. Milroe is running with the third-strong offense almost exclusively at OTAs, according to beat reporters in attendance.

“As for Jalen Milroe, the third-round pick exclusively ran the third-team offense and didn’t get as many plays as the other two [Darnold and Lock],” Bob Condotta wrote in a recent column for The Seattle Times. “But he connected at one point with fellow rookie Elijah Arroyo on a fade route in the end zone.”

Milroe is a dynamic dual-threat quarterback who is largely considered a developmental player due to incomplete processing and passing skills. The Seahawks hope Milroe will develop into a legitimate starting quarterback. They’re not going to rush the process, with Darnold and even Lock ahead of him on the depth chart.

Milroe is being afforded opportunities at OTAs to develop at his own pace. Working exclusively with the third-string offense is setting appropriate expectations for all parties involved.
