The time for half-measures is over for the Washington Commanders. Their season is teetering on the brink, with speculation rising about a trade-deadline sell-off if the team cannot win either of its next two games.
While the NFC East might still be wide open, the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys are slowly separating themselves. Washington’s schedule is getting a little easier, but it’s also worth remembering they have achieved almost nothing since making the conference championship game in 2024.
Head coach Dan Quinn is under strain. Majority owner Josh Harris is giving him more time to turn things around, but the situation is fluid. And even though an in-season firing doesn’t seem likely, changes will be imminent after the campaign if this ship cannot be turned around.
Quinn assessed everything over the bye week. Drastic measures are needed, and the Commanders must be aggressive in implementing the changes needed to improve.
If they can, then all hope might not be lost.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens. The Commanders have a lot of soul-searching to do, but they are still fighting for their head coach. If they make the right changes, they should be much more competitive.
With that in mind, here are seven Commanders who could get bigger roles after the bye week.

Trey Amos – Commanders CB
Trey Amos made his triumphant return in Week 6 against the San Francisco 49ers, which was sorely needed. The cornerback missed most of the year with a fractured fibula and sprained ankle, and his return gave everyone a huge lift.
Amos could be a big part of the team’s plans. Staying healthy is crucial, but a key role is long overdue. That’s come down to injury rather than underperformance, but the point stands.
With the bye week to further heal and sharpen his skill set, the Commanders could (and should) make Amos a focal point after the bye week.
He has the physical tools that fit defensive coordinator Daronte Jones’ scheme, and the 2025 second-round pick should see a huge uptick in the 58 percent of defensive snaps he accumulated on Monday Night Football.
The Commanders may look to take things slowly with Amos. That’s understandable, but if he can do more, Washington could have a productive cornerback trio alongside Amik Robertson and Rasul Douglas.
And after missing so much time since being drafted, Amos should be raring to make a difference.
