Chiefs Make Big Retirement Announcement Before NFL Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

After winning back-to-back Super Bowls in 2023 and 2024, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t get it done in Super Bowl LIX (2025), falling to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Chiefs entered the offseason with several roster questions, the biggest possibly surrounding 10-time Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce. He took a few weeks to decide whether to return for his 13th season or retire, but ultimately chose to chase a fourth Super Bowl ring.

Outside of Kelce, several other NFL players chose to retire after the 2024 season, including Saints quarterback Derek Carr and wide receiver Julio Jones.

On Wednesday, a former teammate of both Mahomes and Kelce retired as well.

Punter Dustin Colquitt, who has been out of the NFL since 2021, has signed a one-day contract with Kansas City to retire as a member of the Chiefs.

The former Tennessee Volunteers standout played 15 seasons in Kansas City, making two Pro Bowl appearances and helping Mahomes and Kelce win their first ring.

The Chiefs announced the signing and retirement on social media.

“We have signed Dustin Colquitt to a one-day contract,” the Chiefs wrote on X. “He will officially retire as a Kansas City Chief ❤️ Congrats on a well-earned retirement, @dustincolquitt2!”

Over the course of his lengthy NFL career, Colquitt established himself as one of the league’s top punters, averaging 44.8 yards per punt and placing 483 of his 1,198 attempts inside the 20-yard line.

Following his Chiefs tenure, Colquitt bounced around the league for two seasons, joining teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns. He did have a brief second stint in Kansas City, signing with the team’s practice squad right before the playoffs in 2021.
