On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs conducted their sixth organized team activity (OTA) session of the 2025 season at their practice facility on the grounds of the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City.

This was the second OTA practice open to the media. Arrowhead Pride editor-in-chief Pete Sweeney was there. He posted some observations on social media — starting with a warmer day.

It was a warmer viewing session for this week’s OTA than last week, with temperatures starting in the high 60s and reaching the low 70s by the practice’s conclusion.

The primary running backs were absent, along with some other offensive skill players.

In this look, we did not see RBs Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt, WRs Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster, tight ends Travis Kelce and Tre Watson, offensive linemen Ethan Driskell and Trey Smith or linebacker Cam Jones.

Some other players were limited.

RT Jawaan Taylor and CB Kristian Fulton attended practice but appeared limited. TE Jared Wiley and LT Jaylon Moore were at the workout without a helmet. Both Taylor and Moore had compression sleeves on their left legs.

But the big story surrounded the team’s first-round rookie.

The biggest development from Wednesday was the status of Josh Simmons, who, for the first time with the Chiefs, participated in team scrimmage drills. OL coach Andy Heck confirmed he came out of practice well.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 4, 2025

Heck: “The first thing you can see is [Simmons’] explosive nature. Everything he does is super quick, so we’re working on fine-tuning techniques. He’s able to do individual work within certain limits. As we hone in on the techniques, we don’t want to take away from his…

We also got our first look at Rashee Rice since his injury last season.

The second big development (at least for us writers) was getting eyeballs on WR Rashee Rice, who was sick for the viewing session last week. Rice looks just as Patrick Mahomes described: a lot like he did last season.https://t.co/kUCmjdxRM4

Cornerback Nazeeh Johnson turned in the play of the day.

During the first 11-on-11 session, CB Nazeeh Johnson broke up a Mahomes pass, popping it into the air for CB Trent McDuffie to make a diving INT. This was the play of the day.

Kansas City has made moves to ideally put McDuffie once again in a more versatile position this year.

DC Steve Spagnuolo: “In the past, when we’ve had Trent inside, he’s done some really good things. He’s effective covering, blitzing. The piece of where anybody will be will be determined by how it all shakes up on the corner spots… Trent’s pretty legit at that spot with how…

Rookie wideout Jalen Royals almost had a big play.

Mahomes nearly connected with WR Jalen Royals deep down the right sideline to conclude his first 11-on-11 period, but the ball was in and out of his hands. DL Charles Omenihu batted down a pass from QB Gardner Minshew.

And quarterback Patrick Mahomes almost connected on a deep ball to Xavier Worthy.

In the 7-on-7, Mahomes displayed great intermediate accuracy, connecting with tight ends on the first three plays. He nearly hit a deep ball to WR Xavier Worthy, but it was just out of his reach.

WR Mac Delana caught a well-thrown Minshew ball deep down the left sideline.

The defensive unit was scrappy on a few plays.

Continued 7-on-7, CB Jaylen Watson broke up a Mahomes pass intended for RB Brashard Smith. In the RZ, RB/FB Carson Steele fought off three defenders to catch a Mahomes pass that led to a roar from the offensive players watching on the sideline.

Two UDFA rookies made some catches.

Later in the same period, TE Jake Brinningstool brought in a TD from Mahomes within the 10-yard line. Dalena caught a TD within the 5 from Minshew on a quick slant.

Mahomes finished with a flourish.

In the final 11-on-11 period, Mahomes hit Worthy across the middle in stride while throwing on the run — and Brinningstool added another catch from Mahomes with LB Nick Bolton covering him well.

And as always, Pete shot some video.

Wednesday ended with an old friend who was back in town for the day.

To conclude the day, legendary signing punter Dustin Colquitt spoke to media members about sigining a one-day contract to retire with the club.

The Chiefs will get back to work next week. They’ll have their final four Phase 3 sessions from Tuesday through Friday. Reporters will be able to observe next Thursday’s session, when Pete will file more observations. Then the team’s mandatory minicamp will take place the following week.
