First, a weekly award.
Now a monthly.
Broncos inside linebacker Alex Singleton was named the AFC’s defensive player of the month Thursday after a prolific October.
Singleton, 32, leads the NFL in tackles with 101 and racked up 65 in four October games. He also recorded five tackles for loss and two sacks in that span.
If you extend the run one day into November and Denver’s 28-24 win over Kansas City, Singleton became just the third player since 1987 to record 14-plus tackles and a sack in consecutive games.
Singleton was named the AFC’s defensive player of the week last week for a 19-tackle game at Arizona.
He leads the league in total tackles and solos (59) and stops (53), tackles that result in negative expected points added for the offense.
Singleton has allowed yards in coverage so far this year — there are no perfect metrics, though Next Gen Stats has him responsible for the most passing yards of any linebacker in football so far this season at 352 — but the work in the run game and tackling generally has been elite so far this season. When paired with fellow inside linebacker Justin Strnad, who has handled coverage responsibilities at a high level this season, the Broncos are rolling out a veteran duo in the middle of the field who are excelling.
Singleton is the first Denver defender to win a player of the month award since Pat Surtain II in November 2024. He’s also the fifth linebacker joining Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware, Simon Fletcher and Karl Mecklenburg.
Singleton is only the second player since 1994 to reach 100 tackles in the first eight weeks of the season, joining Zaire Franklin, who did it for Indianapolis in 2013.
The Broncos linebacker also leads the NFL in defensive snaps played this season. He’s logged 555, all but one, through eight games. That’s 20 more snaps than Green Bay safety Evan Williams and 48 more than the Broncos’ next-closest player, safety Brandon Jones.
