FOXBORO — Rob Gronkowski will be back in town Saturday afternoon for his induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame.

He carved out 30 minutes of his day Thursday to meet with reporters to discuss his upcoming induction ceremony.

Gronkowski’s induction lines up nicely with the 10th anniversary of the 2016 Patriots Super Bowl LI-winning team, which will be honored during Sunday’s game against the Packers. Former quarterback Tom Brady will also be in Foxboro, broadcasting his first Patriots game with FOX Sports.

The former Patriots tight end shared his excitement to see old teammates like Rob Ninkovich, Matthew Slater and Danny Amendola.

He also gave the backstory behind his famous Gronk Spike touchdown celebration, crediting fans for its popularity.

“There’s one thing that I would say that truly stands out, and I would just say the Gronk Spike,” Gronkowski said, via video conference call. “Like the Gronk Spike was lethal. It was legendary, and the Patriot fans created the Gronk Spike. I always just wanted to Gronk Spike it, because it wasn’t allowed in high school. It wasn’t allowed in college, so I spiked it the ball when I got to the NFL, and it literally just caught on. Not because I was trying to get it to catch on, because the fans just went berserk over it, and I was like, ‘This is great! Like, how can I not keep on with this Gronk Spike?’

“I finally got to do it. It’s a rave, you know? So I just kept doing it, and that was a special moment. That kind of defines my career too, as well. Gronk Spike, like powerful, you know? You’re just out there to score touchdowns, as well, because the Gronk Spike meant a touchdown. So the Gronk Spike kind of just sums up my career saying that.”

Gronkowski was asked earlier, “On a scale of 1 to 10 on your fun meter, what are you expecting this weekend to be?”

He joked that it would have been a 10 out of 10 when he was 22 years old, but he’s expecting it to be an 8.7 — a callback to the No. 87 he wore with the Patriots.

“It means everything about my NFL career with the Patriots, ust to be able to be recognized with just the greats that were all before me,” Gronkowski said.

Gronkowski’s Patriots Hall of Fame induction will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Patriot Place Plaza.
