One of the biggest roster questions left for the Tennessee Titans to address is inside linebacker, specifically who will start next to free agent signee Cody Barton in the new-look unit.
Many analysts believe the Titans will eventually add a veteran to the mix, but until they do, they have a group of young players vying for that spot in the rotation. While nothing definitive will be known until the start of training camp, the inside linebackers are competing at OTAs, trying to make a positive impression on the coaching staff.
On Tuesday, second-year linebacker Cedric Gray spoke to the media and discussed the new linebacker room and what lies ahead.
“It definitely feels different,” Gray said, “I feel a lot more comfortable now.”
This could be huge for the young linebacker, who came on during the second half of the season after battling injuries early in the year. Thrust into the lineup after injuries decimated the linebacking corps, he made an impact, and he feels that it created some momentum that he is carrying with him through offseason activities.
When asked what his expectations and goals are heading into the season, he was very clear with his answer.
“Just want to be out there playing,” he said. “In any way, shape, or form or fashion. I just want to be out there and contribute and help this team.”
Primarily competing with Otis Reese and James Williams for the starting role, Gray could be exactly what the Titans are searching for at inside linebacker. The former fourth-round selection out of North Carolina has the size, speed, and athleticism that could allow him to slide in next to Barton and solidify the middle of the Titans’ defense.
