C.J. Stroud might be the top name missing time at NFL OTAs, but he’s not the only key Houston Texans player out from reps.
Fourth-year linebacker Christian Harris, who was limited to four total games last season, hasn’t been out working drills, either. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans mentioned on Tuesday that he would be limited throughout the summer, but the team expects him back by the start of training camp.
“Christian is working hard and he’ll be ready to roll for training camp,” Ryans told reporters following drills.
Harris dealt with a calf and ankle injury last season, which limited him to just three regular-season games. During his second season, the third-round pick looked like the next breakout star after totaling 101 tackles and collecting his first career pick-six in the wild-card round over the Browns.
Last season, he finished with 20 tackles and a sack.
Entering a contract year, Harris needs a good season to prove he’s worth re-signing. He also needs to get on the field to prove he’s worth remaining in the starting role. Both Henry To’oTo’o and Azeez Al-Shaair are expected to be staples for the franchise at the second level entering Ryans’ third season. Houston also inked a one-year deal with former Colts starter E.J. Speed.
Last season, Speed finished with a career-high 142 tackles in 15 games. He also posted seven tackles for loss and five sacks.
The Texans will have three practices this week. The next open practice to the media comes next Tuesday at 9:30 p.m.
