Well, one game on the Green Bay Packers’ 2025 schedule just got a lot more interesting. With reports that Aaron Rodgers is signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Packers are now scheduled to face their former quarterback in 2025.
The Packers and Steelers will face off on Sunday, October 26, in Week 8 of the upcoming season, in primetime on Sunday Night Football. The highly anticipated matchup draws comparisons to when Brett Favre signed with the Minnesota Vikings and faced Green Bay for the first time in 2009. The Vikings defeated the Packers 30–23, with Favre throwing for 271 yards and three touchdowns.

Fortunately for the Packers, Rodgers is not playing for a divisional rival—though his new team and former team do have some history. Green Bay and Pittsburgh faced off in Super Bowl XLV, where the Packers captured their fourth Super Bowl title in franchise history. Rodgers was named Super Bowl MVP after throwing for 304 yards and three touchdowns. It would be his only Super Bowl appearance in 18 seasons in Green Bay.
The idea of Rodgers joining Pittsburgh had been floated around for most of the offseason. After a disappointing two years with the New York Jets, Rodgers was released and—rather than retiring—will continue his career at age 41 with an organization that has a long history of winning.
He joins a Steelers team that reached the playoffs in 2024 with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson as starting quarterbacks. In typical Pittsburgh fashion, defense was their calling card, finishing tied for first in takeaways and top 10 in scoring defense.
With Rodgers and a new ultra-talented wide receiver in the picture, the offense should be much improved. In March, the Steelers sent two picks to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for DK Metcalf, who had previously been linked to the Packers.

Rodgers and Metcalf could be a lethal combination. Rodgers thrives when he has a legitimate number-one option, and Metcalf is a physical specimen who has posted at least 900 receiving yards and five touchdowns in each of his six NFL seasons. If both are healthy in Week 8, that will be a key matchup to watch.
We’re still a long way from the Packers facing off against Rodgers, but it’s exciting to think about nonetheless. This is almost déjà vu for Green Bay, though the circumstances are slightly different. Still, it’s going to be must-see TV when Rodgers faces his former team—potentially for the only time in his Hall of Fame career. Of course, the two teams could meet again in this year’s Super Bowl, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
