NFL insider Albert Breer says Aaron Rodgers waited to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the team wanted him at mandatory minicamp, and he obliged by signing.
“The Steelers are signing Aaron Rodgers to a one-year deal, sources confirm (NFL Network and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette first). For Pittsburgh, Rodgers reporting in time for the June minicamp was important, and Rodgers has obliged. He’ll be on the field next week,” Breer wrote.
It was unknown if the Steelers had set a deadline for Rodgers. Still, the mandatory minicamp seemed to represent a line of demarcation until the team started to pursue other players.
The Steelers’ three-day mandatory minicamp will be held next week from June 10 to June 12. Rodgers’ presence will allow him to acclimate with his teammates and organize workouts during this time.
Rodgers already organized a throwing workout with DK Metcalf back in April. Now, it seems he is in a place with his personal issues where Rodgers believes he can dedicate enough time and energy to the Steelers.
Rodgers had 28 touchdowns to 11 interceptions in 2024. He went just 5-12 in his starts with the Jets, and even after they acquired Davante Adams, went just 3-8. It was a tough season for Rodgers, who also had multiple leg injuries.
The Steelers think something remains in the tank for the former four-time MVP. They had zeroed in on him as their target, and even though they had to wait a while, Rodgers is now set to be their starting quarterback.
