The Tennessee Titans entered the offseason with a plan to establish some key pieces around a young, incoming quarterback.

Though they may not have known Cam Ward would be the selection at the time of free agency, the Titans essentially crafted their offseason to surround the Miami product with as much help as possible. Even so, there’s still one more move that could be made.

After beefing up the offensive line with Dan Moore Jr. and Kevin Zeitler, Tennessee also added wide receiver Tyler Lockett in free agency. Then, they drafted two wideouts in Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike on Day 3 and added tight end Gunnar Helm in the fourth round.

With all that said, Kurt Benkurt of Bleacher Report proposed a trade that would send a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a reunion with tight end Jonnu Smith, who is seeking a new contract.

“Give me Jonnu Smith to the Titans. Now, what does a young quarterback in Cam Ward need more than anything in my opinion? I think he needs a tight end that can ball out and make plays and doesn’t rely on him to be perfect,” Benkurt said. “The best quarterbacks in the league have a tight end as someone they can rely on in some way, shape or form, and I think the Titans would do Cam Ward justice by going out and getting a guy who can be that guy for him from day one.”

Smith, 29, is coming off the best season of his career when he posted 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns with Miami in 2024. He thrived over the second half of the season, posting a 17-game pace of 104 receptions for 1,054 yards and 11 touchdowns over his final 12 games.

A reunion with Smith would be an interesting move for the Titans considering the history he had with the organization. He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Titans after they selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft.

Across 60 career games during that stretch, Smith averaged just 29 receptions for 346 yards and four touchdowns per season in Nashville. Even with his breakout performance in 2024, the acquisition of Smith would likely come with mixed reviews from Titans fans.

Tennessee needs to surround Ward with as much talent as possible in order to further his development so it may at least be something to consider if Smith and the Dolphins continue to be far apart on contract negotiations.
