New Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen is already seeing encouraging progress from Trevor Lawrence as the franchise quarterback heads into his fifth NFL season.
After wrapping up OTAs on Thursday, Coen praised Lawrence’s development, particularly in an area that’s central to his offensive scheme: footwork.
“I think his footwork has drastically improved,” Coen said. “The drop of a quarterback is very similar to a dance. Each song has a different rhythm, each play has a different rhythm… we’re trying to create black-and-white lines for footwork, for reads, for timing.”
This offseason marks Lawrence’s third NFL system and third head coach, with Coen now taking over play-calling duties after a standout year as Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator. The goal, Coen says, has been to refine the fundamentals while allowing Lawrence to master the overall structure.
“What I’ve really looked for from him in this time has been focusing on his lower half and just running the show,” Coen said. “Is he operating the offense at a high level? Yes, he is right now.”
Lawrence was limited to 10 games in 2024 after suffering a shoulder injury that required surgery, but the former Clemson star still threw for 2,045 yards and 11 touchdowns. Now healthy and armed with a five-year, $275 million contract extension, Lawrence is looking to bounce back under new leadership in Jacksonville.
