Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has been one of the best players at his position for a while. But without MVPs, Offensive Player of the Year awards or multiple Super Bowls, he often gets lumped into the “very good” category of quarterbacks.
And so, as he and the Rams head into the 2025 NFL season with Super Bowl on the mind, CBS Sports’ Jared Dubin thinks he might be the most underrated quarterback in the league.
“It’s easy to forget what Stafford can do when he’s afforded even remotely good protection in the pocket and capable wide receivers,” Dubin wrote. “His numbers from last season don’t look amazing, but if you isolate the games where the Rams actually had Puka Nacua on the field, Stafford checked in with an EPA per dropback figure that would have tied Jayden Daniels for eighth-best in the league over the course of the full season. Even in his late 30s, Stafford can still sling it with the best of them.”

Stafford is one of the main reasons the Rams went from perennial Super Bowl contender under head coach Sean McVay to a Super Bowl winner in 2021. Stafford can simply execute the offense on a level most quarterbacks cannot. And even though the Rams moved on from the trusty Cooper Kupp this offseason, they replaced the veteran with perhaps a better all-around receiver in Davante Adams.
Adams, Nacua and Kyren Williams formed a ridiculous good trio of top-three skill position players for Stafford, and that’s before we consider the potential of rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson. If Stafford can remain healthy and the offensive line can keep him upright, Stafford has a chance to put up career numbers this late in his career.
