As the 2024 NFL season wound down and it became clear that future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers would not remain with the New York Jets, speculation began over where he would go next.

There were plenty of suitors, of course, including the New York Giants. At least, that’s what we were led to believe.

Now, it seems, Rodgers was never going to sign with the Giants, preferring retirement.

Now, this is exactly what Rodgers is supposed to say when asked about choosing his destination. It’s not becoming of a player to suggest that they might have gone elsewhere after just joining a new team, and it certainly doesn’t bring your teammates to your cause.

Rodgers is supposed to say that it was always going to be Pittsburgh, despite having had conversations with multiple teams, including the Giants.

This isn’t Earth-shattering news, and even though it’s something he is supposed to say, it doesn’t take the sting out of his meaning. The Giants should have a chip on their shoulder after this comment, and they should want to prove Rodgers wrong.

But let’s be real here: Rodgers was never a fit for this team.

The Giants are in a rebuild, and they’ve placed Jaxson Dart in the most opportunistic position they can. Rodgers would have been one-and-done if he even makes it a full season without getting injured. Not only do the Giants have Russell Wilson to start while Dart learns the ropes, but Jameis Winston is in the wings, too.

So, Rodgers’ comment on retiring before playing anywhere but Pittsburgh is a moot point. The Giants have moved on, and so has Rodgers.
