It may not be the most high-profile storyline heading into training camp, but the San Francisco 49ers have a legitimate kicker competition brewing in Santa Clara. Jake Moody, the often-criticized former third-round pick, is vying to hold off veteran newcomer Greg Joseph for the job.
The 49ers held a two-day mandatory minicamp this week, giving reporters a chance to evaluate both kickers up close. On Tuesday, Moody connected on six of his seven field goal attempts.
When asked about Moody’s performance during the offseason program, head coach Kyle Shanahan said, “The field goal’s been going between the two uprights. I’ve liked it so far. Been good.”
Joseph took the spotlight on Wednesday and made the most of it. According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the veteran went a perfect 7-for-7, drilling kicks from 28, 33, 36, 40, 47, 52, and 55 yards out.

Reporters will get an extended look at both kickers when training camp opens in late July. Moody is looking to bounce back after a disappointing season in which he missed 10 field goal attempts and one extra point. Most of his struggles occurred after sustaining a high-ankle sprain, frustrating a segment of the 49ers’ fan base that has called for a change.
In response, Moody has adjusted his kicking approach this offseason, shifting from a three-step to a two-step motion in hopes of improving his consistency, even if it means sacrificing some power.
“I felt like I’ve had some inconsistencies with my first jab step,” Moody explained last month. “So I figured if I just get rid of that step altogether and I just take two steps instead of the three, it’s less room for error.”
He added, “It’s been going great. Obviously, when you have been doing something since the sixth grade, it was definitely challenging at the start. I had to keep telling myself to stick with it.”
With Joseph looking sharp and Moody working to refine his technique, the 49ers’ kicker battle could be more compelling than expected as the team prepares for the 2025 season.
