Could the San Francisco 49ers be a landing spot for All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander? CBS Sports’ Jared Dubin seems to think so.
The Green Bay Packers are releasing Alexander after seven seasons with the team. The former first-round pick and two-time Pro Bowler should attract significant interest across the NFL. At 28 years old, Alexander still possesses strong talent—when healthy.
While his injury history is a concern, Alexander has consistently performed at a high level. He has earned a Pro Football Focus (PFF) defensive grade of 71.9 or higher and a coverage grade of 73.0 or higher in each of his seven NFL seasons.
Dubin recently named the top potential landing spots for Alexander, and the 49ers made the list.
“When healthy, he has been one of the best cornerbacks in football, but has increasingly been unable to remain on the field in recent years,” Dubin wrote. “Since 2021, Alexander has played in just 34 of 68 possible games. He’s played more than seven games in a season just once during that span, though he did make the Pro Bowl and the All-Pro second team during that 2022 campaign.”
By releasing Alexander, the Packers save over $17.1 million in cap charges. Dubin believes the 49ers could be a logical fit given their current secondary situation.
“The Niners lost Charvarius Ward in free agency this offseason, and currently seem likely to start either journeyman Tre Brown or third-round pick Upton Stout opposite Deommodore Lenoir at one of their corner spots,” Dubin noted.
San Francisco also has second-year cornerback Renardo Green, who showed flashes of potential in limited action last season. Still, cornerback depth is one of the team’s biggest concerns heading into the 2025 NFL season.
“Bringing in another veteran — even one with injury issues — is an idea that has some merit, especially considering how much cap room the 49ers have on their hands,” Dubin continued. “According to Over the Cap, only the Patriots have more cap space than the Niners’ current $46.6 million in room.”
In addition to the 49ers, Dubin listed the Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens, Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, and Atlanta Falcons as potential suitors for Alexander.
