Nick Chubb’s days in Cleveland have appeared to be over for months. The only question was where the free-agent running back would end up for the 2025 season.

It appears the answer to that question will be with the Houston Texans.

Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz was the first to report Sunday that Chubb was scheduling a visit with the Texans for June 9. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport shortly after that reported the running back was expected to sign with Houston, assuming a positive outcome with his physical.

If that happens, it will signal the end of an era for one of the franchise’s all-time fan favorites. It will also be the end of one of the most successful careers for a Browns player since 1999.

Chubb will depart No. 3 on the Browns’ all-time rushing list with 6,843 yards in 85 career games. The only two in front of him are face-of-the-franchise Pro Football Hall of Famers Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly.

“Man, just for me, the city of Cleveland means lot,” Chubb said in a conversation with the Beacon Journal on Feb. 7. “To me, it’s a special place. The people in Cleveland make it great, the fans and just the people around the city. But always a special place to me in my heart. I loved it here and it will always be home, no matter what.”

That Chubb’s new team will likely be Houston makes for a full-circle moment. The Browns selected Chubb out of the University of Georgia with the No. 35 overall pick in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, a pick they acquired from the Texans in exchange for taking on Brock Osweiler’s contract.

The Browns had signaled their decision to move on from the franchise icon with multiple decisions over the course of the offseason. They drafted two running backs in April — Ohio State’s Quinshon Judkins and Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson — and reworked fourth-year pro Jerome Ford’s contract to give the club more flexibility.

Injuries over the last two seasons expedited the separation. Chubb suffered a major knee injury Sept. 18, 2023, in a Week 2 game in Pittsburgh that cost him the rest of that season and the first six games of the 2024 season.

Chubb’s 2024 season was then halted by a broken foot in a Week 15 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He rushed for 332 yards and three touchdowns on 102 carries over the course of eight games.

The four-time Pro Bowler wasn’t just top three in the Browns’ record books in career rushing yards. His 30 100-yard rushing games are second most all-time, and his 51 career rushing touchdowns are third most.

Chubb’s 5.11 yards-per-carry average is fourth highest all-time in NFL history, behind Jamal Charles (5.38), Brown (5.22) and Mercury Morris (5.19). His rushing total is the fourth highest in the NFL since 2018, behind Derrick Henry (10,189), Saquon Barkley (7,216) and Josh Jacobs (6,874).
