Legendary Colts owner Jim Irsay dies

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay has died at 65.

Indianapolis Colts late owner Jim Irsay’s legacy is already living on through his colleagues and former players – like Reggie Wayne. Soon, his name will be a permanent fixture in Lucas Oil Stadium.

On Friday, the day that would have been Irsay’s birthday, the Colts announced they will induct the late owner into the team’s Ring of Honor on Sept. 7, ahead of their Week 1 game against the Miami Dolphins.

“There was no bigger advocate for the Colts, the NFL, the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana than our dad, Jim Irsay,” Irsay’s daughters and new Colts owners, Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt and Kalen Jackson, said in a statement. “It’s only fitting that he now joins the other amazing Colts legends in our Ring of Honor who contributed so much to our franchise and our community over the past four decades.”

Irsay will be the 20th member of the team’s Ring of Honor and joins his father, Robert, who was the first person inducted when the Colts began the tradition nearly 30 years ago.

Jim Irsay owned the Colts from 1997 until his passing in May 2025. During his tenure as owner, the Colts won 10 division titles, two conference championships and the first Super Bowl victory in franchise history.

The team has already announced that players will wear a jersey patch with Irsay’s initials and signature on it during the 2025 season. Earlier this month, it also held a private memorial ceremony, with more details to come later this summer on additional opportunities for fans to remember the late owner, the team said.

On Monday, the Colts announced that ownership of the team passed to Irsay’s three daughters, with Irsay-Gordon taking over duties as principal owner and CEO.
