Broncos Wire‘s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at eighth-year wide receiver Courtland Sutton, No. 14.
Before the Broncos: Sutton was a four-year player for the SMU Mustangs from 2014-17. Sutton played in 40 games with SMU, who were a part of the American Conference at that time. In college, Sutton was a prolific receiver, catching 195 passes for 3,220 yards and 31 touchdowns. Sutton also rushed for a touchdown, and completed two passes for 75 yards. Sutton was selected by the Broncos in the second round (40th overall) in the 2018 NFL draft.
Broncos tenure: Sutton was drafted by the Broncos to complement wide receiver Demaryius Thomas in the post-Manning years of the team. In 2018, Thomas was traded to the Houston Texans in part due to the emergence of Sutton as a reliable pass catcher. In nine games, Sutton totaled 47 catches for 702 yards and four touchdowns before having a career year in 2019. In 14 games started, Sutton upped his catch total to 72 and had a career-high 1,112 yards and six touchdowns, all while being selected to the Pro Bowl for the first time.
Sutton tore his ACL in Week 2 of the 2020 season, missing the rest of the year. Sutton was back to being the No. 1 target in 2021, catching 58 passes for 776 yards and two touchdowns. Sutton had a down year in 2022, the first year of quarterback Russell Wilson in Denver, catching 64 passes for 829 yards and two touchdowns, before exploding in 2024 for 10 touchdowns, the first double-digit scoring year of his career.
After Russell Wilson was released prior to the 2024 season, Sutton was back to catching passes for his eighth different passer (Case Keenum, Brandon Allen, Emmanuel Sanders, Joe Flacco, Wilson, Jarrett Stidham, Bo Nix). Sutton again established himself as the best one-on-one receiver for Denver, catching 81 passes for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns last fall.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: 100 percent. One of Nix’s most reliable targets in 2024, Sutton is the most veteran voice in a receiver room that features Marvin Mims, Devaughn Vele, Troy Franklin and 2025 draftee Pat Bryant. As the other receivers hopefully begin to develop in 2025, Sutton may have more opportunities for one-on-one wins.
