With offseason programs now behind us, we will be getting a jump start on our training camp preview by going player-by-player through the Indianapolis Colts’ 91-man roster.

Going alphabetically, up next is running back Salvon Ahmed.

On offense, he has 168 career carries, totaling 596 yards at 3.5 yards per carry with five touchdowns. Ahmed also has 43 career receptions for 319 yards and another touchdown, per PFF.

The majority of Ahmed’s career production in the run game came during his rookie season in 2020.

2024 PFF grades2024 Season Review

In mid-October of last season, the Colts announced that they had signed Ahmed to their practice squad when the team was dealing with some injuries at running back at that time.

Ahmed was released by Miami at the end of last summer’s training camp. He briefly spent a week on the Broncos‘ practice squad before landing with the Colts, where he spent the remainder of the 2024 season.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season

We know that Jonathan Taylor and DJ Giddens will account for two of the Colts’ roster spots at the running back position. That leaves, most likely, Khalil Herbert, who the team signed in free agency, and Tyler Goodson, who has appeared in 22 games with the Colts over the last two seasons, competing for one roster spot.

So for Ahmed, it’s like going to be an uphill battle when it comes to making the final roster, which leaves the practice squad as perhaps his most likely landing spot. Where he can attempt to differentiate himself is in the pass game, both as a pass-catcher and in pass protection. This was an element that was missing from the Colts’ offense last season.

While we know that Taylor will be leading the way at running back, as GM Chris Ballard said during the NFL combine, the Colts need more production from the backup roles this season.
