The wide receiver position has been one of the hottest topics for fans of the Tennessee Titans throughout the offseason, and the Titans have made some significant additions to the unit. They did a similar thing back in 2012, but this time invested a first-round pick on Baylor wide receiver Kendall Wright.

Wright never really hit his stride with the Titans, topping 1,000 yards only once during his five-year career in Nashville, finishing with 280 receptions for 3,244 yards and 18 touchdowns. After leaving Tennessee, he bounced around the league but was never able to become a consistent threat.

Looking back at the 2012 draft class can be a fun endeavor, allowing fans to fantasize about who the team could have selected with the 20th pick and whether or not they made the right choice.

The team at Pro Football Focus (PFF) did just that with a re-draft of the 2012 NFL draft and had the Titans select Miami edge Olivier Vernon.

20. Tennessee Titans: EDGE Olivier Vernon, Miami (FL) (Round 3, Pick 72)

Original Pick: WR Kendall Wright, Baylor

Vernon was a highly underrated player who made just one Pro Bowl, but he enjoyed a productive career with the Dolphins, Giants, and Browns. He earned a career-high 88.0 PFF pass-rush grade in 2015, ranking among qualified edge defenders. The next season, his first with the Giants, he compiled 88 pressures — the second most in the NFL, behind Khalil Mack.

All told, Vernon earned at least a 71.6 PFF pass-rush grade in six of his final seven NFL seasons.

Adding a talented defensive lineman is always something that can benefit a team, and Vernon could have made an impact in Nashville. Of course, the fact that the Titans were entering a stretch of musical chairs with their head coaches and their quarterbacks did not help the situation for whoever they selected in 2012, especially with the player being a wide receiver.

It’s enjoyable to reflect on how different decisions could have led to different outcomes. But when you’re talking about personnel, you have to consider more than just the positions they play. The coaching staff and systems installed must align with the skills of both the existing players and those being brought in.

Looking back at this down period of Titans football makes re-drafting fun, but also an unrealistic exercise.
