The Chicago Bears have a plethora of weapons on offense for new head coach Ben Johnson, which includes some new offseason additions with rookie tight end Colston Loveland and rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III.

While the Loveland selection came as a bit of a surprise, considering other needs and the presence of veteran tight end Cole Kmet, it allows Johnson to utilize 12 personnel, which is something he did often during his time as offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. Still, that hasn’t stopped speculation about a potential Kmet trade.

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin examined some potential Pittsburgh Steelers targets for new quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and there was a surprising name in the mix — Kmet, who Benjamin believes might already be on the trade block after the Loveland selection.

“The Bears all but proclaimed a new face of their tight end position by spending a first-round pick on Colston Loveland this year, and while Kmet still has the benefit of legitimate NFL experience, it’s very possible new coach Ben Johnson will lean all the way into Loveland out of the gate,” wrote Benjamin. “In that case, perhaps the Steelers would be interested in pairing Kmet with Pat Freiermuth, especially if the price is lower than, say, acquiring Kyle Pitts from the Atlanta Falcons. Kmet logged at least 50 catches in three straight seasons from 2021-2023.”

Kmet has been a valuable leader and impactful weapon in the passing game since being drafted by Chicago in 2020. But it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the Bears traded Kmet — after he signed a four-year, $50 million contract in 2023 — if Loveland progresses ahead of schedule.

The Bears haven’t gotten an opportunity to evaluate Loveland on the practice field yet as he’s been sidelined as he recovers from shoulder surgery back in January. But Loveland is expected to be full-go for training camp next month, and Johnson and co. will get a look at just how potent the rookie tight end can be in the passing game.
