Diego Pavia has high expectations for Vanderbilt’s football program.

Last year, the Commodores notched their first winning season in a decade by going 7-6. Vanderbilt stunned Alabama and won their first bowl game since the James Franklin era.

That success has Pavia feeling confident entering the 2025 season. The starting quarterback made some lofty claims on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast.

“Vanderbilt is going to run Tennessee after this year,” Pavia said. This is going to be the new staple of college football. It’s going to happen here at Vanderbilt.”

College football fans don’t quite share his optimism. Many felt Pavia overreached by predicting a future in which the Commodores would surpass the Volunteers as the state’s premier college football program.

“This is hilarious,” a fan responded.

“There’s healthy self-confidence, then there’s delusion. Think we know where this one falls,” a fan claimed.

“Poor guy,” a fan said. “He knows the only way anyone will pay attention to Vandy football is saying things like this.”

“I thought Vandy was a smart people school,” a fan wrote.

“I can’t wait for this guy to come to Knoxville,” a Vols fan said.

Pavia is feeling good about Vanderbilt football following a promising 2024. After transferring from New Mexico State, he accounted for 28 touchdowns (20 passing, eight rushing) with just four interceptions.

The Nashville school could enjoy an upward trajectory under head coach Clark Lea. Pavia predicted that Vanderbilt will blossom into a big NIL player that just needs one big year to become a popular destination for recruits.

However, Vanderbilt is hardly an SEC powerhouse. The program has never won 10 games in a season, and they haven’t ranked in the AP’s top 10 since 1947.

That history didn’t deter Pavia, who has “no doubt” Vanderbilt can defeat Alabama again and make a legitimate title push.

“We’ve got the firepower, we have the depth,” Pavia said. “We’ve got the defense, the offense … we’d be selling ourselves short if I was to sit here and tell you we don’t have the faith to go win the national championship.”
