There are plenty of differences between second-year Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald and his predecessor Pete Carroll.

5 takeaways from Seahawks’ OTA and minicamp practices

Those differences extend to the practice field, where Seahawks Radio Network analyst Dave Wyman has noticed a definite contrast.

According to Wyman, Carroll favored getting his players as many reps as possible under the NFL’s practice limits. On the flip side, Wyman said he’s noticed during recent spring practices that Macdonald and his staff emphasize on-field teaching, even if it means fewer practice reps.

“For Pete, it was reps, reps, reps, reps, reps,” Wyman said on Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob. “I think Pete was like, OK, we’re wasting opportunities. Let’s get as many reps as we can, and (then) we can fix it on film. Whereas here with Mike Macdonald, it’s like, we’re going to fix things on the field.

“And that’s just two different mindsets,” he added. “It doesn’t mean one’s better than the other. But what stood out to me was just how Mike Macdonald and his staff, … if they get something wrong, they’re going to go back and walk through it.”

That on-field teaching is particularly evident with new offensive line coach John Benton, who brings a wealth of experience from his two decades coaching NFL O-lines. During recent practices, Benton has been seen hammering technique and fundaments.

“The thing that you see is a lot of teaching,” Wyman said. “And when (general manager John Schneider) was looking for a head coach, I remember talking to him and he mentioned that. He’s like, we want teachers. … And you see a lot of that with John Benton.”
