The quarterback drama for the Vikings during the 2025 offseason has been all-timer and a rollercoaster and a half for fans and the team alike.
Talks went from Sam Darnold returning, to Daniel Jones returning, to them wanting to crown J.J. McCarthy, to them wanting to pursue Aaron Rodgers, except they didn’t, before maybe they did? Regardless, the drama was settled once and for all when the former Packers MVP signed with the Steelers and Vikings showcased McCarthy at minicamp last week.

That brings us to this week, when Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer finally explained the process in which the Vikings went through.
Breer explains, “If Sam Darnold or Daniel Jones had come back (the Vikings tried on both), those would’ve been, essentially, one-year deals to give the team some insurance with a 14-win group returning. The reason they didn’t go after Rodgers was that getting him, conversely, would’ve been hitting the pause button on making McCarthy their quarterback for a year.”
The hitting the pause button part is where the Vikings seemingly did not want to go again. After suffering a knee injury and giving McCarthy every mental practice rep under the sun, he proved he was ready for the moment.
Based on what we saw from his live arm and mobility, his knee is ready for the test ahead in training camp and beyond.
