GREEN BAY — Matt LaFleur may not know for certain just how good of a football team he will have on his hands this season, but the Green Bay Packers head coach and his staff will start finding out at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23.
That’s when the first of the Packers’ 14 open-to-the-public training-camp practices kicks off this summer, a slate that includes the team’s annual Aug. 2 Family Night practice inside Lambeau Field and an Aug. 21 joint practice with the Seattle Seahawks that will serve as the final open session of the summer.
Players begin reporting to training camp on July 18, when rookies, quarterbacks and players coming off injuries are set to arrive. The rest of the players report on July 22, the day before the first practice.
“Everybody feels good this time of the year,” LaFleur said after the Packers closed out their offseason program with their final minicamp practice on June 12. “The good thing [is], for the most part, we had pretty good attendance. We had the majority of our guys here for the duration.
“It’s been fun to watch how these guys grow. Especially guys maybe going into their second year, they’re so much further along than they were a year ago [in terms of] some of the conversations that we have. And then getting the new guys in, [there’s value in] getting them acclimated to how we do things and the standards that we have here.”
“[But] you’ve got to continue to work. … You can’t take your foot off the gas for one second in this league because, if you do, people are going to bypass you. We’ve got to keep pushing.
“These guys, they shoulder most of that responsibility in regards to how they go about training and taking care of their bodies and doing the things that they need to do to get ready to go when we get back here for the start of camp.”
The low number of open-to-fans practices is a continuation of a decade-and-a-half trend, although the team does hold a number of additional practices that are closed to fans. In the 1990s and 2000s, the only closed practices were walkthroughs the day before preseason games.
But since the league’s 2011 collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association took effect, teams across the league have had fewer and fewer open-to-the-public practices.
LaFleur’s predecessor, Mike McCarthy, was coming off a Super Bowl XLV championship when the new practices rules took effect in 2011, outlawing two-a-day sessions and curtailing the total practice time allotted to all 32 NFL teams.
The Packers held 21 open practices in 2011 and 2012; 20 open practices in 2013; 17 open practices in 2014 and 2015; 16 open practices in 2016; and 15 open practices in both 2017 and 2018.
Since LaFleur took over in 2019, the Packers have had held 16 open-to-the-public practices in 2019; 13 in 2021; 12 in 2022; 13 in 2023, and 16 last year. There we no open practices in 2020 when the league — like the rest of the world — was in the throes of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Five of the Packers’ 14 open practices will happen in a six-day span to open camp, with practices on July 23, 24, 25, 27 and 28. There is a league-mandated day off on Saturday, July 26, following the first three practices.
The team will also hold its annual shareholders meeting on July 25, at 3 p.m. following practice. That event will serve as the official transfer of power from retiring president/CEO Mark Murphy to his successor, Ed Policy.
Aside from the prime-time affair of Family Night, the rest of the practices all start at 10:30 a.m. and will be held at Ray Nitschke Field, weather permitting.
The joint practice with the Seahawks comes two days before the preseason finale at Lambeau Field on Saturday, Aug. 23.
The Packers also will have a joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts at their training-camp site in Westfield, Ind., on Thursday, Aug. 14 — two days before the Packers and Colts face off at Lucas Oil Stadium in their exhibition matchup on Aug. 16.
This marks the third straight year that the Packers have had multiple joint practices with other teams.
In 2023, they practiced with the Cincinnati Bengals in Cincinnati and with the New England Patriots in Green Bay. Last year, they practiced with the Denver Broncos in Englewood, Colo., and with the Baltimore Ravens in Green Bay.
