With offseason programs behind us, here is an updated look at the Colts’ depth chart on defense.

With offseason programs now behind us, the Indianapolis Colts will break until July 22nd, when the team reconvenes for training camp.

Ultimately, it is during training camp and in the preseason, when the intensity is turned up and the pads come on, that we will begin to get a much better idea of where positional battles stand and what the full 53-man roster could look like.

Admittedly, that can be difficult information to glean during OTAs and minicamp, when the pads aren’t on and the focus is on installs.

But nonetheless, there are still players who stand out during this time of the year, and we also get glimpses into potential rotations, along with seeing who is playing with the first, second, and third team units.

So, given what we know at this time, what might the Colts’ depth chart on the offensive side of the football look like?

If you missed our updated depth charts on offense, you can find those here.

The Colts have a well put-together rotation here. However, how the playing time will shake out once we get beyond Latu and Paye on the depth chart remains to be seen. How big of a role can Tuimoloau earn right away? How will Ebukam look after coming back from an Achilles injury? Where does Lewis fit in? Can Land’s upside and growth earn him a roster spot?

Improved play from those on the depth chart behind Buckner and Stewart is a must this season for the Colts. Five players will be competing for two rotation spots and potentially three roster spots. I gave Gallimore and Smith the edge right now as the new players brought in, but I expect that everything beyond Buckner and Stewart’s spots will be up for grabs this summer.

This is a very inexperienced group outside of Franklin, with Carlies’ 242 career defensive snaps being the most on the roster. He and Franklin will be the starters, while I gave Bachie the third spot on the depth chart, given his experience playing in Lou Anarumo’s defense. But again, with a new scheme and a lot of inexperience, there will be a lot up for grabs during training camp.

That starting spot opposite of Ward is up for grabs. Jones has missed time this offseason recently due to injury, but as the returning starter, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. With that said, many have been impressed with Walley’s play, while the big thing for Brents is showing he can stay healthy, as Shane Steichen put it. Also, one thing to watch when it comes to putting together the final roster, do the Colts keep seven cornerbacks or have to choose between Ballentine and Womack?

Somewhat like linebacker, once you get beyond the top of the depth chart, there is a lot of inexperience here. And with that comes unknowns, and also a lot of competition to determine who falls where and who makes the final roster. I have Wohler ahead of Thomas already. I just think his versatility is going to allow him to find the field in certain situations this season.
