This Monday marks 76 days before the 2025 regular season opener for the New Orleans Saints. The Saints will take on the Arizona Cardinals at home to kick off their year, the 59th of their existence. New Orleans will also try to better their 5-12 record from 2024 under first-year coach Kellen Moore. Offensive lineman Will Clapp is currently wearing No. 76 for the Saints. Clapp started his career with New Orleans in 2018, playing his first four years with the team and now returning after three years with other teams. Our Saints Player of the Day, here’s a closer look at Clapp’s background.

New Orleans selected Clapp late in Round 7 of the 2018 NFL draft. Wearing No. 64 during his first stint with the Saints, a span of four seasons, Clapp suited up in three games as a rookie and started one contest. In 2019, he’d play in 14 games and made three starts as a reserve center and guard. His 309 offensive snaps that season were his highest in four years with New Orleans. Clapp spent most of those four seasons alternating between the practice squad and active roster. He would appear in a total of 34 games, making seven starts.

In 2022, Clapp signed a free agent deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. The head coach of the Chargers during Clapp’s two seasons there was Brandon Staley, the new defensive coordinator for New Orleans. In 2023, the Chargers hired Kellen Moore as their offensive coordinator. Moore, of course, is the newly-hired head coach of the Saints. Clapp played in 31 of a possible 34 games while with the Chargers, including 14 with a career-best 11 starts under Moore in 2014. His 706 offensive snaps that season were also the most of his career.

After spending most of 2024 on the Buffalo Bills practice squad with one game played, Clapp returned to the Saints on a one-year contract this offseason. In doing so, he’ll be reunited with Kellen Moore and switches jersey numbers to 76. Will Clapp is expected to compete for a backup spot on the New Orleans offensive line, a unit that showed no quality depth after injuries decimated the position in 2024.
