WASHINGTON (7News) — The countdown is on to July 15. The Washington Commanders and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser have 21 more days to convince the D.C. Council to approve a new stadium deal at the RFK site.

A source close to the situation told 7News Sports Director Scott Abraham that the team believes there is a path to getting that vote in three weeks.

The team aims to play football in the new stadium by 2030, which would allow them to compete in big events like the Women’s World Cup and a future Super Bowl.

According to the same source, any delay by the D.C. Council would seriously threaten that timeline.

Also worth mentioning is that the source said the team has not ruled out the possibility of a retractable roof for the new stadium.

The source added that the team is currently discussing keeping “RFK” somewhere in the name of the new stadium as regards naming rights.

The source also mentioned that the team is looking into building a museum at the new stadium, which would honor the franchise’s storied history.
