The New England Patriots haven’t been the powerhouse they once were in recent years. Owner Robert Kraft is well aware of the tough seasons the franchise has endured, but he believes Drake Maye and Mike Vrabel can turn things around in 2025.
In the 21st century, no NFL franchise has matched the success of the Patriots. The AFC East team wasn’t always considered a dominant force—until the arrival of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady changed everything.
Together, the head coach-quarterback duo led the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles. Unfortunately, that era came to an end with their departures, sending New England into a steep decline they have yet to recover from.
Robert Kraft believes the Patriots will surprise everyone in 2025
In 2020, the Patriots chose not to extend Tom Brady’s contract. The front office aimed to refresh the quarterback room and, despite Brady’s legendary status, both sides moved on.

Brady went on to win another Super Bowl with the Buccaneers, while the Patriots struggled to stay competitive—even within their own division. This ongoing decline eventually led to Bill Belichick’s departure in 2024.
After an underwhelming year with Jerod Mayo as head coach, New England moved on and brought in Mike Vrabel. Many believe he could be the key to solving the team’s problems—and Robert Kraft is one of them.
Following several years of frustration, Kraft now believes the Patriots are finally in a position to contend again. The owner acknowledges the challenges of the past few seasons, but he’s confident that Vrabel and quarterback Drake Maye can turn the tide in 2025.

“The last two years were the worst years of my 31 years of ownership,” Kraft told Adam Schefter of ESPN. “We have to change that. We have a new coach in Mike Vrable who is really connected with the players, who is doing great work. We have a young quarterback and a lot of great veterans — free agent veterans who came in. A great draft class. We’re gonna have fun this year, I promise.”
Will Drake Maye start for the Patriots in 2025?
While the Patriots still have faith in Drake Maye, doubts remain. The quarterback joined the team as a first-round pick last year, but he hasn’t quite lived up to expectations yet.

In response, the Patriots signed veteran Joshua Dobbs this offseason. Although Maye is expected to start, he’ll need to prove he can lead the offense effectively—otherwise, Dobbs could eventually step in to take over.
