The Green Bay Packers broke a streak 23 years running during last week’s NFL Draft as they selected Texas Longhorns wide receiver Matthew Golden in the first round.

The pick marked the first time the Packers took a receiver in the first round since they selected Javon Walker of Florida State in 2002.

Golden helped lead the Longhorns to the College Football Playoff in 2024 after coming to Austin from the Houston Cougars, and now appears poised to become a top target for Jordan Love in Green Bay.

Recently, Golden received a glowing endorsement from Packers legend Jordy Nelson heading into the spring and summer months.

“Speed. That’s what I’ve been hearing is a lot of speed, so that’s something that’ll be good to be able to stretch the field on the outside, maybe open it up inside for the tight ends they’ve got,” Nelson said in an interview conducted by RG Media on YouTube.

Golden was taken with the 23rd overall pick and will go from Quinn Ewers to Jordan Love in hopes of maintaining his position as a deep threat and sure handed receiver.

“I think it’ll be a fun dynamic to have…Now he’ll be able to come in and create that chemistry with Jordan and hopefully be successful,” Nelson said.
