A veteran guard is still out there available to fill in for Sam Cosmi.
The Commanders‘ starting right guard tore an ACL in the Washington upset win over the Detroit Lions in the playoffs.
The Commanders had jumped out on top of the Lions early in the second quarter on their way to their 45-31 win in Detroit. However, in the second quarter, Cosmi suddenly fell. It was his ACL. He did not return and will most likely not be returning until later in the 2025 season.

Brandon Coleman appears to be moving to guard after the Laremy Tunsil trade and drafting of Oregon offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. So, does Coleman move to left guard, competing against Nick Allegretti for the starting position? Or might Coleman be asked to sub in for Cosmi as an interim right guard?
Then there is Brandon Scherff. Yes, I’m serious. Drafted in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft by the Redskins, he played very well here during his seven years wearing the burgundy and gold. Scherff then gave the Jaguars three more seasons (2022-2024).
Turning 34 in December might be scaring some teams off right now, as the former Iowa Hawkeye remains unsigned and free. Might Commanders GM Adam Peters be willing to offer Scherff one of those one-year contracts he likes to offer veteran players?
Remarkably, Scherff did not miss a single start for the Jags in his three seasons in Jacksonville. That’s impressive dependability. Scherff would be willing to come and take on an Interim starting role, or would he? Perhaps Scherff wants to continue starting. In addition, not missing a start for three years, he may feel he is in a position to hold out until he receives the situation or offer he desires.
