Shaquill Griffin is set to be a member of the Seattle Seahawks once more.
The cornerback is rejoining the Seahawks on a one-year contract, according to multiple reports Wednesday. The deal carries $3 million base salary and is worth up to $4 million, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Seattle Seahawks’ Macdonald has the pieces for ‘really exciting’ defense
Seahawks Radio Network analyst and former NFL wide receiver Michael Bumpus shared his instant reaction to the reunion with Griffin during Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy.
“This is a veteran move. He’s gonna compete with Josh Jobe over there at that corner spot,” Bumpus said.
Jobe re-signed with the Seahawks on a one-year deal in March. He served as the team’s No. 3 cornerback and played on the outside when Devon Witherspoon moved inside to nickelback. Griffin played 502 of 572 snaps on the outside last season, per PFF.
“It’s not something that moves the needle very much, but it’s a trustworthy veteran,” Bumpus continued. “And I think moves like this just add some depth, you get some experience in that room and you provide some competition for Josh Jobe. So it’s a good move.”
Griffin was a third-round pick by the Seahawks in 2017 and spent four years with the franchise, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2019. He racked up 249 tackles, 48 passes defended, nine tackles for loss and six interceptions during his time in the Emerald City.
He left the Seahawks to sign a three-year, $40 million with the Jaguars in 2021. He played for four teams in four seasons after leaving Seattle.
Griffin spent last year with the Vikings where he played 50% of their defensive snaps while serving as a reserve cornerback. He had 41 tackles, six passes defended and two interceptions while ranking 92nd out of 222 cornerbacks in Pro Football Focus grading.
