5 Buffalo Bills

This was the put-team-over-the-top draft.

The Bills need a speedy corner, and they got the fastest one in the draft in Kentucky’s Maxwell Hairston. The beefed up the defensive interior, and took a potential fan favorite pass rusher in Landon Jackson from Arkansas.

In all, the first five picks were for the defensive side. That’s fine, but they needed more help at receiver, and didn’t give the spot any help until a throwaway pick in the seventh.

4 Atlanta Falcons

It’s all about the pass rushers.

The Falcons needed them, they traded away next year’s No. 1 to get Tennessee’s James Pearce to go along with 15th overall pick Jalon Walker, and now the problem is solved … maybe.

There were only five picks, but between those two pass rushers, a whopper of a steal of Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts in the third, Oklahoma safety Billy bowman in the fourth, and a wonderful under-the-radar grab of Wisconsin OT Jack Nelson in the seventh, every pick was a great idea.

Even if the Falcons had to pay for it. Give them this. They’re going for it.

3 New York Giants

They were gift-wrapped Abdul Carter – he’s the best player in this draft. That part was easy, it was the quarterback situation that made things funky.

The Giants are probably better than everyone thinks with Russell Wilson, at least early on. Whether or not you like Jaxson Dart – not the hugest fan, but okay – it was a call to deal with the quarterback problem at a relatively okay price of the 25th overall pick.

Things got better from there with Toledo DT Darius Alexander good enough to have gone far earlier than the first pick in the third round. Arizona State RB Cam Skattebo might really be the main man, Purdue OG Marcus Mbow in the fifth round was a steal, and in all, this was the draft the Giants needed.

2 Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City was in a weird spot.

It was good enough to get back to the Super Bowl, but it showed ten-mile wide flaws on the way to losing to the Eagles. They were able to address almost all the problems in this draft, and all with good creativity and – for this franchise – wonderful value just about everywhere.

Obviously only a few of the seven picks will end up working out, but there wasn’t one selection that didn’t make perfect sense. Oregon LB Jeffrey Bassa in the fifth round felt right. Cal corner Nohl Williams in the third felt right. So did Louisville pass rusher Ashton Gillotte earlier in the third.

If Utah State wide receiver Jalen Royals doesn’t turn out to be one of the biggest steals of the draft in the fourth round …

it was a great draft for a Super Bowl contender.

1 Cleveland Browns

Seriously, what more could you possibly ask for out of a draft?

The Browns filled a need pick with Michigan DT Mason Graham – who just might be the best player in this thing – and they got Jacksonville to pay for it with a giant trade including a first rounder next year.

Every pick was fantastic. That included Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel in the third round, and Ohio State RB Quinshon Judkins in the second, and Tennessee RB Dylan Sampson in the fourth, and …

Shedeur. In the fifth round, that’s unbelievable value and a low price, and now, with no risk.

The Cleveland Browns just got a lot better.
