Undrafted Free Agent Tanner Elgersma Spearheads Packers Quarterback Depth Behind Jordan Love originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Quarterback Jordan Love has no competition for the starting position with the Green Bay Packers. Beyond Love, though, head coach Matt LaFleur has three options battling for a roster spot.

It seems that the undrafted free agent is making a name for himself in Green Bay and potentially making a case to override the veteran of the pack.

Tanner Elgersma surfaced as an impressive candidate in the offseason despite not being selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. Initially, it was assumed that Elgersma would experience difficulty transitioning into the pros. However, he’s worked all the way up to potentially earning a practice squad spot while veteran Sean Clifford is facing a lot of pressure to out-perform the new kid on the block.

Clifford signed an exclusive rights free agent contract in the offseason and will make the $960,000 league minimum in 2025-26. He’s unable to negotiate deals with other teams in the meantime.

Even with money on the table, though, his offseason performances haven’t been up to LaFleur’s and Brian Gutekunst’s standards. Malik Willis will stand behind Love for the 2025-26 season, but unrestricted free agency is looming over him in his upcoming campaign with the Packers. Without Clifford stepping up to the challenge and proving himself to LaFleur and Gutenkust, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Elgersma take the No. 2 spot in 2026-27.

Elgersma and Clifford need to prove that they can handle meaningful snaps. Given Clifford’s underwhelming performances so far, Elgersma may just be carving out a path in becoming the first Canadian quarterback in the NFL in 22 years.
