The New England Patriots spent an entire offseason acquiring talent, and now, they’ll spend an entire training camp whittling that talent down to 53 players.

Some tough decisions are on the horizon for Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, with players set to battle it out on the practice field for one of the few coveted roster spots. Vrabel having no ties to the previous roster in New England should ensure a wide-open competition this summer.

He wasn’t afraid to let David Andrews, Jonathan Jones, Deatrich Wise Jr. and Joe Cardona—the last remaining remnants of the Patriots’ Super Bowl era—walk out the door. So there’s no reason to think logic will be hindered by any form of status or prestige in the building.

Here is a depth chart projection for the Patriots ahead of 2025 training camp:

QuarterbackStarter: Drake MayeBackup: Josh DobbsOther: Ben Wooldridge

There will be no quarterback controversy heading into training camp for the Patriots. Drake Maye is the starter and potential franchise face of the team, while Josh Dobbs is the emergency Plan B option. Rookie Ben Wooldridge is simply looking to impress enough to get the call back for a spot on the practice squad.

Running backStarter: Rhamondre StevensonBackups: TreVeyon HendersonOther: Antonio Gibson, Lan Larison, Brock Lampe, Terrell Jennings, Trayveon Williams

One of the biggest questions heading into training camp is how much rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson pushes Rhamondre Stevenson for the starting job. Henderson is the more versatile running back with the ability to run, receive and pass protect at an elite level. Undrafted rookie Lan Larison is also a player to watch in the running back competition. He’s an underrated player with a legitimate shot at making the final 53-man roster.

Wide receiverStarters: Stefon Diggs, Kyle Williams, Demario DouglasBackups: Kayshon Boutte, Kendrick Bourne, Mack HollinsOther: Efton Chism III, Ja’Lynn Polk, Javon Baker, Demeer Blankumsee, John Jiles, Jeremiah Webb

The Patriots could have two new starters at wide receiver with the arrival of four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs and rookie third-round draft pick Kyle Williams. More receiving threats could mean big things for Demario Douglas, who is currently the team’s best option in the slot. The real competition will come down the depth chart with undrafted rookie Efton Chism III posing a serious threat to second-year wide receivers Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker.

Tight endStarters: Hunter Henry, Austin HooperBackup: CJ DippreOther: Jaheim Bell, Jack Westover, Gee Scott Jr.

Hunter Henry led the Patriots in receiving yards last season, and Austin Hooper proved to be one of the more reliable receiving targets for quarterback Drake Maye. It should be rinse, wash and repeat for the veterans in 2025 with little competition to push them. The No. 3 tight end role could come down between Jaheim Bell and undrafted rookie CJ Dippre.

Offensive lineLeft tackle: Will Campbell, Vederian Lowe, Marcus Bryant, Yasir DurantLeft guard: Cole Strange, Layden Robinson, Tyrese Robinson, Mekhi ButlerCenter: Garrett Bradbury, Jared Wilson, Ben BrownRight guard: Mike Onwenu, Jack Conley, Sidy SowRight tackle: Morgan Moses, Caedan Wallace, Demontrey Jacobs

The Patriots have reconstructed their offensive line with the additions of rookie first-round pick left tackle Will Campbell, along with veteran right tackle Morgan Moses and center Garrett Bradbury. They still have one of the better right guards in the league in Mike Onwenu, and Cole Strange is finally healthy at left guard. There are still some depth questions, particularly at tackle, but this Patriots unit is miles better on paper than it was a year ago.

Defensive tackleStarters: Christian Barmore, Milton WilliamsBackups: Joshua Farmer, Khyiris TongaOther: Jeremiah Pharms Jr., Isaiah Iton, Jaquelin Roy, Jahvaree Ritzie

The defensive front in New England could be the best it’s been in years with the arrival of Milton Williams and a healthy Christian Barmore. That gives the Patriots two potential game wreckers anchoring the defensive line. They also added a promising newcomer in rookie Joshua Farmer, who has the potential to emerge as a major contributor right out of the gate.

Edge rusherStarters: Keion White, Harold Landry IIIBackups: Anfernee Jennings, Bradyn SwinsonOther: K’Lavon Chaisson, Monty Rice, Truman Jones, Elijah Ponder, Cam Riley

Harold Landry was one of the Patriots’ big free agent signings in the offseason. He’s a talented veteran pass rusher with experience playing under Mike Vrabel in Tennessee. However, the star of the pass rush should be Keion White. The former second-round draft pick is itching for a breakout season that could finally come this year in a defense that will allow him to pin his ears back and get after quarterbacks.

LinebackerStarters: Robert Spillane, Jahlani TavaiBackups: Christian Elliss, Jack GibbensOther: Marte Mapu

Robert Spillane has looked like the leading linebacker throughout the spring practices. Jahlani Tavai is currently dealing with an injury, and it could open the door for Christian Elliss to leapfrog him on the depth chart. There was already a chance things were leaning in that direction with Elliss getting some of the top reps with Spillane in the early practices.

CornerbackStarters: Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III, Marcus JonesBackups: Alex Austin, Marcellas Dial Jr., Isaiah BoldenOther: D.J. James, Miles Battle, Jordan Polk, Kobee Minor, Brandon Crossley

Christian Gonzalez is arguably the best cornerback in the NFL in only his third year. He earned his first All-Pro nod last season after blanketing some of the best receivers in the league. The Patriots made their secondary even scarier by signing Carlton Davis III in free agency. If Marcus Jones stays healthy in the slot, New England could have one of the best secondary units in the league.

SafetyStarters: Kyle Dugger, Jabrill PeppersReserves: Craig Woodson, Dell PettusOther: Jaylinn Hawkins, Marcus Epps, Josh Minkins, Brenden Schooler

Things look incredibly familiar at the top with Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers leading the way. But the Patriots have a talented rookie safety who is capable of stealing the show. Rookie fourth-round draft pick Craig Woodson turned heads throughout the spring practices with his instinctive play on the field. We’ll see if he can keep the early success rolling in pads during the summer work.

Special teamsKicker: Andres Borregales, John Parker RomoPunter: Bryce BaringerLong snapper: Julian Ashby

The Patriots spent two late draft picks on rookie kicker Andres Borregales and long snapper Julian Ashby. It’s hard to envision either one of those being throwaway picks. Borregales should be the favorite to beat out John Parker Romo for the starting job, and Ashby doesn’t have any real competition at the moment. Meanwhile, Bryce Baringer has been a solid punter for the Patriots.
