The Seattle Seahawks are excited about their pass-rush in 2025. Mike Macdonald’s aggressive unit finished tied for eighth in the league in quarterback takedowns with 45.0 a year ago. It was spearheaded by Leonard Williams, who recently clocked in at No. 99 on the NFL Top 100 list.
Williams isn’t the only pass-rushing threat. GM John Schneider signed veteran rusher DeMarcus Lawrence to a three-year contract in free agency. Lawrence joins a deep room that has Boye Mafe entering a contract year, and potential breakout candidate Derick Hall in his third campaign.
Despite the depth, there are question marks about the future make-up of this group. Lawrence is an aging asset, Mafe isn’t guaranteed to be here in 2026, and the oft-injured Uchenna Nwosu is also entering a contract year. Schneider should always be aware of opportunities to improve his roster when such questions are lingering.
A potentially interesting opportunity is looming. The Pittsburgh Steelers have received “multiple inquiries” from teams around the league about potentially trading for T.J. Watt, according to national reports. Watt recently skipped minicamp amidst a contract-related standoff.
On the surface, the Seahawks possess the cap space required to consider trading for, and extending, Watt. Schneider currently possesses roughly $30.6 million in cap space with $55.8 million in financial flexibility slated for next offseason, per OverTheCap. Meeting Watt’s contractual demands is a possibility.
Trading for the 30-year-old Watt would ultimately signal the type of all-in move the Seahawks may not be ready to make, however. While Schneider added aging assets like Lawrence and Cooper Kupp to his roster this offseason, signaling he believes his team remains in a competitive window, there are probably too many unknowns to part with future draft capital in exchange for Watt.
Multiple teams are considering trading for Watt. It’s unknown if the Seahawks are among them. Never say never, but it’s unlikely the Seahawks are among Watt’s potential suitors. The Seahawks remain invested in EDGEs Mafe, Hall, and Lawrence.
