A former college football and NFL coach has died following a battle with cancer. He was 79 years old.

Wayne “Buddy” Geis, a 30-year coaching veteran in the college football world and National Football League, died on Wednesday. He died following a battle with Leukemia.

The Pennsylvania native was a standout player coming out of high school.

Geis, an Altoona native and 2010 inductee into the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame whose home was in Neptune Beach, Fla., passed away at the age of 79 on Wednesday morning after battling leukemia.

Before embarking on his fabulous coaching odyssey, Geis was a football and baseball standout at Altoona Area High School, graduating from there in 1965

Geis coached at the college level for several years before going into the National Football League. He spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys.

Prayers are pouring in for his friends and family members.

“Condolences to the friends and family of Buddy Geis, an excellent football mind,” one fan added.
