Travis Hunter is attempting to do something that no one in NFL history has: be an elite player on both sides of the ball.
After the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Hunter with the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL draft, the central question became how the Jaguars would deploy the former Colorado star.
Throughout the spring, all indications have been that Liam Coen and the Jacksonville coaching staff will give Hunter every opportunity to star at cornerback and wide receiver. But in a game situation, what would that look like?
We won’t know until the preseason what the Jaguars plan to do, but Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce seems to have an answer to slowing down Hunter when he plays cornerback/
“If he plays corner, they’re going to run deep balls at him all day,” Kelce said during an appearance on the “Bussin’ With the Boys” podcast.
In theory, Kelce’s plan makes a lot of sense. Tire out Hunter with go routes on defense, making him less likely to beat you on offense. However, Kelce has never seen Hunter play a game, and if he had, he would know that his stamina is on a different level.
While Hunter must prove he can maintain his elite endurance at the next level, his college numbers do not lie. The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner played a total of 1,102 snaps, all at a high level.
Kelce might be in for a rude awakening come Oct. 6 when his Chiefs travel to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars.
