The Canadian Football League recently released its entire negotiating rights list.

That shows which players form outside the CFL (including in the NFL) have been claimed by a given franchise to have the first chance to discuss contract terms with a player who decides to come to Canada.

One of the players on the CFL list is Trey Lance. The Saskatchewan Roughriders hold his negotiating rights.

Lane was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the 49ers.

He had won two FCS national titles at North Dakota State, then started four games in two seasons with the 49ers.

Since then, Lance has spent time as a Cowboys backup, and he started one game for Dallas, too.

Now he’s with the Chargers to play behind star Justin Herbert.

Lance has a 2-3 record across his five starts with five TDs and four interceptions to go with 276 rushing yards on 4.2 yards per carry.

He’s never figured out the passing aspect of things enough to be a sure-thing NFL starter.

Lance likely won’t be heading up north anytime soon, but just the fact that he was claimed suggests the CFL might think Lance isn’t too long for the NFL.
