The Detroit Lions’ offense was the best in the league last year, and they still have all the talent to be the best in the league this year. A big reason for that is and was Jahmyr Gibbs. He is coming off a big-time 2024 season that saw him put up a franchise record 20 touchdowns.

Based on how the Lions put together their coaching staff and the comments that Dan Campbell and John Morton have made after Ben Johnson moved on to the Bears, the Lions plan to continue to run the offense through Gibbs.
ESPN’s Mike Clay believes that while Gibbs could still have a good year, there will be some regression. He put Gibbs on his list of 11 players he believes will score fewer touchdowns in 2025. He believes Gibbs will go from 20 touchdowns to 14. Here’s his reasoning:
“Gibbs exploded for 20 touchdowns last season, and if he reaches that mark again, he’ll be only the sixth player in NFL history to achieve that feat. Gibbs was substantially above his expected TD total (13.2) and well behind David Montgomery in carries inside the 5-yard line when both were active (17 to 11). Even in a terrific Detroit offense, a dip is likely.”
14 is not much of a dip. It is 6 fewer touchdowns, but it’s still a pretty good season. We can understand the dip from the aspect of receiving touchdowns. The Lions have a lot of weapons in the pass game, and that could affect his targets. On the ground, it’s hard to see much of a dip.
It’s actually easy to see a bump, considering the feeling that the Lions may be looking to lean Gibbs way more in 2025 than they did in 2024, with David Montgomery getting a lot of looks. We’ll see what happens very soon.
